Mission Statement:
To make the broader military community, and the public at large, better aware of the ongoing role of the SEABEES as U.S. Navy combat troops and construction workers heavily involved in national defense and humanitarian aid worldwide. |
Seabee Museum Davisville, R.I. -- Saving an Almost-Lost Legacy
On a visit to my home state of Rhode Island, I was very fortunate to have
pre-arranged a meeting with Navy Seabee Veterans of America members there who
are working hard to make a Seabee Museum and Memorial Park on the site of
"The Original Home of the Seabees" become a reality. Island X-1 of North
Kingstown, R.I. is spearheading the effort. In particular, retired Chief Equipment
Operator Richard (Fess) Parker as local Island Commander is tirelessly
overseeing the work. I met with him and several SEABEE volunteers at the site of the
construction. As the photos reveal, much is already in place, but much is yet to
be done. I was saddened to see so much of the original heritage of the
Seabees abandoned, demolished, and turned into civilian uses, although I certainly
understand the need for revitalizing the local economy. The efforts to preserve
and restore as much as possible are supremely important for historical
reasons alone, not to mention the pride all Seabees share in the accomplishments of
our predecessors. The need to permanently honor those who sacrificed so much to
create the enduring legacy of the United States Navy Construction Battalions
becomes overwhelming while viewing the empty or reconstructed landscape that
once held so much of the SEABEE vitality and spirit.
