Mission Statement:

To make the broader military community, and the public at large, better aware of the ongoing role of the SEABEES as U.S. Navy combat troops and construction workers heavily involved in national defense and humanitarian aid worldwide.

Orlando SEABEES Honor Shipmates Killed in Iraq

On one of the hottest days yet this year in Central Florida, several current and former members of the Orlando, Florida detachment of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Fourteen gathered at annual Memorial Day ceremonies held on the grounds of Woodlawn Memorial Park in Ocoee. In addition to the familiar reasons for honoring our war dead of past conflicts, a very special purpose brought together reservists now serving in NMCB-14, and former members of that local Naval Reserve unit, accompanied by family members and loved ones. It was their sad duty to solemnly honor the recent combat loss of seven members of NMCB-14 while serving in a humanitarian aid role in Iraq.

The loss of two SEABEES in a convoy vehicle that struck a concealed explosive device, followed two days later by the deaths of five more in a mortar attack on SEABEES in formation to hear encouraging words from their top SEABEE commander, sent shock waves throughout the entire SEABEE community worldwide. The center of the greatest impact of those tragic losses is the Central Florida area. Of the seven SEABEES killed in those incidents, three resided and pursued civilian careers in and around Orlando before being called to active duty on March 1st, 2004. Their deaths occurred only a short time later in a far away place, while on an assignment intended to raise the basic living conditions of the Iraqi people around Al Ramadi, one of the worst areas of terrorist activity in the entire country. It is unusual for three members of a single small reserve unit to lose their lives at the same time in this way. Especially so soon after leaving their families, friends, and civilian careers to embark on a humanitarian aid mission far from home.

Joining the local Naval Reservists still serving in the Orlando unit were at least one retired SEABEE reservist and one former member. A display of memorial tributes and SEABEE historical information, dominated by a T-shirt bearing a large and colorful logo of NMCB-14, was set up behind the public seating area. A nearby table held several SEABEE books and magazines, as well as memorial handouts listing the seven SEABEES lost in Iraq by name. There were press releases available for local media and a colorful poster depicting the creation of the original "Fighting Seabee" logo in 1942 when the first "Construction Battalions" or "CBs" were formed.

Local media representatives expressed great interest in the information presented. A number of on-camera interviews of the SEABEES in dress white uniforms and a retired SEABEE reservist were filmed after the conclusion of the ceremonies and later aired on local newscasts. Additionally, print reporters also interviewed SEABEES and family members present.

In a very moving and public gesture, Navy veteran and Mayor of the City of Ocoee, the Hon. Scott Vandergrift, assembled the SEABEES in dress uniforms as an Honor Guard escort to the wreath being placed at the base of the memorial flag display specificly for all Navy deceased.

Those who attended left with a greater appreciation for the sacrifices of all military personnel, living and deceased, and a new awareness of the vital role that Navy SEABEES, including reservists from central Florida, play in our national defense posture. The most rewarding moments came as civilians made their way out of the crowd toward the very visible group of SEABEES in uniform. Men and women alike extended a handshake to one or more of the SEABEES and thanked them personally for their service to the country. A bond is now formed between SEABEES who serve, and those who are served by the self-sacrifice of Navy SEABEES. All of us are better citizens as a result.
