Mission Statement:
To make the broader military community, and the public at large, better aware of the ongoing role of the SEABEES as U.S. Navy combat troops and construction workers heavily involved in national defense and humanitarian aid worldwide. |
Bob Decker wants to know:
What Seabee units were attached to Acorn 14? And where can I get a
history of Acorn 14 and the units attached to it?
"Stormin' " answers:
Bob, I'm personally ignorant of the ACORN units you requested info on. I
will forward your request to the best possible source I know of: Bill
Hildebrandt at the CEC/Seabee Historical Foundation. In fact, the Historical
Foundation's Museum Store has an on-line catalog at www.seabeehf.org, which
lists a
WWII unit cruisebook on CD that might be valuable to you in answering at least
part of your question. It's in the Miscellaneous Units section as Acorn 51,
year 1945. Please let me know what you find out because I will be eager to
share it with others on the OSK website! All the way with OSK! "Stormin'"
Bill Hildebrand of the CEC/Seabee Historical Foundation helps out:
Bob,
The ACORNs were standardized small Navy airbases. The best place for
info on ACORN 14 is the Naval Historical Center. Check out their website at
www.history.navy.mil. If you want to call them, start with 202-433-2210,
The Naval Construction Battalions weren't assigned to an ACORN, but they
were sent in to build one. Once it was operational, they usually moved on
and a CBMU was sent in to be the Public Works Dept and make sure the base
stayed operational. The Historical Center should be able to tell you where
ACORN 14 was located and probably who built it along with any CMBU assigned
to operate the base.
Bill Hilderbrand
(Editor's note: Thanks for the assist, Bill. A link for the CEC/Seabee
Historical Foundation can be found on our links page and also in our Books and
Gifts feature. The foundation offers many informational services, including
extensive reunion listings, and an on-line catalog of SEABEE merchandise.)
